Army Rescinds Graham Invite To Speak
Group Says Muslims At Pentagon Would Be Offended
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation a watchdog group is objecting to an invitation for evangelist Franklin Graham to speak at the Pentagon next month. Mikey Weinstein President of the group said Graham’s past description of Islam as "evil" offended Muslims who work for the Department of Defense and the appearance should be canceled.
Weinstein said inviting evangelist Franklin Graham to speak May 6, the National Day of Prayer, "would be like bringing someone in on national prayer day madly denigrating Christianity" or other religious groups. Mr. Weinstein, people denigrate Christians every day. We haven’t heard you objecting to that.
Graham is the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham and president and CEO of both Samaritan's Purse, a Christian international relief organization in Boone, N.C., and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, in Charlotte, N.C.
After the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Graham said Islam "is a very evil and wicked religion." In a later op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal, Graham wrote that he did not believe Muslims were evil because of their faith, but "as a minister .... I believe it is my responsibility to speak out against the terrible deeds that are committed as a result of Islamic teaching."
Mark DeMoss, Graham’s spokesman quoted him as saying, "As the father of a son serving in his fourth combat tour, I'd be glad to know someone was leading a prayer service at the National Day of Prayer, or any other day."
Graham is honorary chairman this year for the National Day of Prayer Task Force, based in Colorado Springs. Evangelist Franklin Graham's invitation to speak at a Pentagon prayer service has been rescinded because his comments about Islam were inappropriate, the Army said Thursday.
Army spokesman Col. Tom Collins said Graham's remarks were "not appropriate."
"We're an all-inclusive military," Collins said. "We honor all faiths. ... Our message to our service and civilian work force is about the need for diversity and appreciation of all faiths."
The Army is becoming too politically correct. They didn't take the necessary steps and we had the Fort Hood Massacre by a Muslim. And not only the Army we are seeing it across America. We can put footbaths and make accommodations for Muslims but not Christians.
Where do these people come from? Anything Christian is now evil? America was built on Christian values. Muslims who hate America speak in America all the time. If Muslims at the Pentagon don’t want to hear what Graham has to say then don’t attend.
