Almost Half Of Detroit Can’t Read
47% Are Functionally Illiterate
A new report just released indicates 47% of Detroit residents are”functionally illiterate.” The alarming new statistics were released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund last week.
The Fund’s Director, Karen Tyler-Ruiz, explained exactly what this means:
“Not able to fill out basic forms, for getting a job — those types of basic everyday (things). Reading a prescription; what’s on the bottle, how many you should take… just your basic everyday tasks,” she said.
“I don’t really know how they get by, but they do. Are they getting by well? Well, that’s another question,” Tyler-Ruiz said.
Some of the Detroit suburbs also have high numbers of functionally illiterate: 34% in Pontiac and 24% in Southfield.
What has happened to our education system? Why in America are we spending billions of dollars on education and getting these kinds of results?
The answer isn’t more money. The amount spent on education increases every year and the quality of education keeps decreasing. We spend thousands per student each year on education.
Since the advent of LBJ’s “Great Society” the core values in America have been going down. Family values have deteriorated. More people each day think they are owed something for nothing.
It is well past time to bring back family values and the work attitude. To get rid of the I’m owed attitude that has become so prevalent in America.
