Group Calls For Ban Of Pledge Of Allegiance In Schools
Students Now can Opt-Out In Brookline, Massachusetts
The Brookline Political Action for Peace wants the Pledge of Allegiance banned from Brookline schools. They say the patriotic oath is reminiscent of "some horrific totalitarian regimes."
School officials in Brookline, Massachusetts, already allow students to opt-out of a weekly recitation of the pledge. That isn't good enough for Political Action for Peace group.
Marty Rosenthal, the group's co-chairman, said the pledge didn't have any education value and was "literally and psychologically a loyalty oath, reminiscent of McCarthyism or some horrific totalitarian regimes."
Rosenthal went on to say, "The pledge is at odds with America's most important traditions."
State Representative Frank I. Smizik backed the group, saying that students who refused to say the pledge were being bullied.
Many Brookline residents, especially veterans and their family members, slammed efforts to strike the pledge as anti-American.
"This is just really stupid," Jack Steele of Duxbury, whose son was killed Afghanistan last month said. "I just find it so disrespectful when I look at the number of men who have given their lives so we could live the way we want."
Back in the day when I was in school we said the Pledge of Allegiance every day. We also lowered our heads for a moment of silent prayer. You also had to behave in school and learn.
But in those days you could leave your car unlocked, you could safely walk down a dark street. There weren't thousands of abortions every day, students actually learned to read and write and most graduated from high school.
But who would want to go back to those days? Having hoodlums terrorizing people and breaking into homes and cars is much better than a child having to say the Pledge Of Allegiance.
