Reid Threatens Government Shutdown

Reid Wants To Add $6.9 Billion To Deficit

The government's fiscal year ends at midnight September 30th.  House republicans are trying to pass a continuing resolution that would  be in effect until Nov. 13 to give Congress more time to pass all of the spending bills necessary to fund the 2012 fiscal year.  Senate Democrats are blocking Republican efforts by insisting that billions more be included.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) warned Tuesday there is a chance that the government could shut down by the end of this month.  Criticizing House Republicans for the disaster relief provisions in their budget bill, Reid told reporters, "We're not going to cave on this."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Tuesday confidently predicted the two sides will come together by Thursday night: "There will not be a government shutdown."

Reid, though, said, "I'm not that sure" there won't be a shutdown. He added, "I am not as certain as McConnell."

Additional funding for FEMA is causing the gridlock.  Republicans are holding the line at $3.6 billion, which they would pay for by cutting government funding to new green automobiles.

Reid says $6.9 billion is needed for FEMA and other flooding and earthquake disaster spending.  The Democrats don't want to pay for the additional $6.9 billion, which they say should be added to the deficit.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) accused Reid of playing a "political game," asserting that the Senate Democrat would be solely to blame if a shutdown occurred.

Cantor is right a shutdown would be Reid and the Democrats fault.  We can't afford another $6.9 billion of debt.  We can afford to cut $3.6 billion from green cars.
